Work Experience Placement at RadioTimes.com

In 2017 I was lucky enough to be offered a week’s work experience with RadioTimes.com. As far as I can tell, I’m still the youngest person to have ever landed such an opportunity with them. It was this initial experience that inspired me to pursue a career in journalism.

What I got out of my time at RadioTimes.com

  • How I developed

    This was my first experience in a professional environment let alone a newsroom. So first and foremost the chance to simply get acquainted with a professional environment was really valuable.

    I really enjoyed learning about how entertainment journalism works, Even though I was primarily based with the online team, I was able to see how the magazine team worked, and how the two collaborated to promote eachother’s platforms.

  • What I've found challenging

    One thing I remember finding particularly tricky was writer’s block. I think when put in an environment when articles needed writing to a tight deadline I felt the pressure to perform and thus experienced a form of performance anxiety. On reflection, I think this extended further than just my work but also to how I presented myself. While I have no material regrets, I think I was constantly second-guessing myself and never truly relaxed. Consequently I think I could have produced more work, faster and to a higher quality if I had backed myself and relaxed earlier in the week.

  • My fondest memory

    I loved the whole environment there. Being in an environment where I was ahead of the general public, and could see the very cutting edge of news was the most exciting phenomenon I’ve witnessed. It was this excitement and novelty that caused me to fall in love with the profession,
